Here is an antique Code-A-Phone Model 440 Answering Machine
Back when AT&T ruled the telephone industry, they refused to allow any equipment to be directly connected to their
telephone lines. To get around this limitation, a company called Code-A-Phone developed an ingenius mechanical device to
answer the telephone without physically connecting to the telephone lines. It used a cradle to hold the phone.
When a call came in it would pick up the handset, send an answering message through a speaker to the telephone mouthpiece,
then record the incoming message from the person who called. The answering machine even comes with a remote control
that triggered the answering machine to replay the messages. You would call the phone that the answering machine was
connected to and hold the remote control up to the mouth piece of the phone you were calling from and push the button.
That would send a tone command that would trigger the answering machine to play back any messages that were stored.
This item is in unknown used condition. It turns on. The front panel light comes on, and the motor runs.
Beyond that we can't tell if it is working. The splice on the answering tape loop has come loose, so the answering
function doesn't work because the tape has come off the loop. It should be easy to resplice the tape to get it working again.
The loose tape is in a small box inside the unit.
There is no manual or schematic with the answering machine.
The answering machine comes with the cradle and microphone.
The phone in the picture is not included, but is available separately for an additional $10.00.
